Last week we went to Crested Butte again. Our friends, the Eismins also came to visit and ski. Rick and Sharon were our neighbors when we lived in Salt Lake City. Our kids all grew up skiing together at Brighton in Utah. They were visiting friends from Denver/Salida and checked out Monarch and then came to ski with us. They skiied two days with us and had to return to Ca. It was fun to reconnect with them. Arn and I tried a couple of new places to eat and drink this time too. The Dogwood Cocktail Cabin was great with really different cocktails. I had a beet infused vodka martini which was delicious. The Old Croatian was very good and we'll go back next time. Mere knew Gabriella, our waitress, who was very sweet. The dog is Sable, the lab at the Brown Labrador Bar and Bakery.
Grandma's been busy....these are the Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls she has been making for my Aunt Rosie. The big group pic was taken at Rosie's house in Oklahoma. She wanted Mom to make a 'few' more so the second batch (with Mom in the pic) are the ones she had started in 2009 and finished in 2010 (took two yrs. due to her stroke). She mailed all of her supplies prior to coming for the winter this year. She estimates that she's made around 100 sets so far. Mom is 85 and quite the doll maker. It was an assembly line around here! She's going to take a break now and get some other projects finished such as her audio books, binding a few quilts, crocheting, and whatever! She's always busy!
We had a little excitement around here Friday night. Meredith was home and we almost went out to eat for her birthday but all of a sudden we heard a bunch of water running. A pipe had burst inside the wall near the outside faucet by the front door. Arn got the water shut off quickly (could have been a disaster). We even had the weird little faucet insulators on. Our plumber came the next afternoon, quickly fixed it, and tried to figure out why it happened. The culprit probably was an outside plug (to plug in xmas lights) which was letting in just enough frigid air to freeze the pipe. Arn squirted in some spray foam insulation and the problem should be solved. We now have a plastic access panel behind the desk which I need to paint to match the wall. It really was the coldest it's ever been here last week (-30 windchill). Not fun without water for a day...glad it wasn't longer. The Steelers lost the Super Bowl too....but lots of pregame excitement.
Meredith is 23 today! Happy Birthday! She's in Crested Butte and we won't get to see her for a week or so. She did get some birthday chocolate chip cookies! Hopefully she's going to do something fun and make a few runs and celebrate tonight. When she was little she had to carry the baby in the picture all over the place and later her favorite item was a white stuffed kitty named Fluffy (which we still have). She's always been adventurous and hopefully she'll get a new camera with some birthday moolah!
The secret to a happy life is not in getting what you want. It is in learning to want what you get.

The previously mentioned patty pan squash that were produced were about the size of a quarter! and only had a half dozen.
Garden Updates 2009
1. Started a composting box. 2. Adding triple mix dirt to garden and flower beds. 3. Still trying to get rid of voles. 4. Trying to plant things that voles won't eat. 5. Buy veggies at Farmer's market due to short growing season. 6. My seeds have come up - yeah! 7. Found some pattypan squash seeds that I need to get in the ground (childhood fav) 8. Harvested lettuce, using fresh mint, chives. 9.Hail Damage, hope everything survives. 10.The pattypan squash seeds sprouted, neversurvived due to major rain and hail. 11.Sunflowers are blooming!!! 12. My green beans are getting baby beans but the voles have discovered this too and my row of beans is slowly dissappearing from below. 13. Well, my row of beans has almost completely dissappeared. Now the voles are starting to work on the row of sunflowers (which did quite well). Today I found a sunflower stalk sticking out of a vole hole..... it was too long for the vole to get the whole thing into his hole. 14. Did harvest 2 jalopenos and 1 onion. Something has been eating my peppers too. 15. 10/10/09 Temp. 18 degrees. Everything is covered in frost. Goodbye garden. Will try to harvest some flower seeds. Brought a lot of seeds from Mom's flowers in Ohio. Hollyhock, zinnia, black eyed susan, morning glory. Will see if they grow next yr. Will also give some to Val to see how they do in North Dakota.
